全学自由研究ゼミナール (Ethnography of Care and Mobility)
Ethnography of Care and Mobility
What is ‘care’? Why do we care—and conversely, why do we often fail to care enough? This course introduces students to the complex dimensions and structural dynamics that shape care, exploring its intersections with gender, the economy, politics, and mobility/migration. Care is fundamental to reproduction and development, and it has regained importance following the awareness during the COVID-19 crisis and in the post-COVID era. There is a pressing need to discuss and support care, amid significant demographic challenges and regional disparities. Yet, care is still undervalued, underpaid (and unpaid), and low-skilled labor, rendering socioeconomic inequalities and marginalized populations.
Ethnography is an essential method for understanding the complexities of care. In this course, students will engage with ethnographic literature to explore this field, while also applying ethnographic methods to disentangle their own social surroundings and relationships. Students will conduct short fieldwork to produce a final term paper. The course will culminate in a roundtable session, providing a dedicated space to discuss research ethics and reflect on our shared knowledge.
