Experiential learning of Japanese traditional and modern culture and its historical development through cross-cultural exchange and communication.

Japanese culture has been influenced by the development of China, India, and Western civilization since ancient times, and while having its own responsiveness and adaptability, it has been reconstructed, conserved, and inherited without losing its traditional culture. It has transformed and developed while absorbing various cultures. While the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic continues to restrict the movement of people, goods, and information across national borders, the acceleration of the digital revolution led to the new ways of exchanging culture and information without physical movement. Under the new circumstances, an innovative strategy is required in developing resources (materials and people) that can facilitate understanding of Japanese culture and promoting its historical value while constantly comparing it with a wide variety of other cultures and enhancing its conservation and reconstruction.
This course has no prerequisites; the course will be held in English and is designed for students without prior knowledge of Japanese studies, anthropology, and/or social and history studies (although naturally those with prior knowledge are welcome)!
We expect different groups of students, who are interested in learning Japanese culture in English, will learn together. They include the group with some basic understanding of Japanese culture, yet having relatively little experience of cross-cultural exchange and multicultural coexistence learning, and others with global/international learning experiences but previously had very few exposure to Japanese language and culture, such as foreign students and PEAK students. In this training, students who have relatively fewer cross-cultural exchange and multi-cultural learning experience will learn together with PEAK and exchange students, who are interested in Japanese culture and indigenous culture of Ainu people. The purpose is to deepen their understanding, promote cross-cultural exchange and enhance their ability to share their thoughts and ideas based on correct understanding of the historical facts and analytical and deeper thoughts brought through mutual and active experiential learning process.
