Case Study (International Financial Institutions)
CASE STUDY (INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS)
This course will provide an overview of key international financial institutions (IFIs) and opportunities to acquire skill to work in IFIs. In the lecture, IFIs are likely to include the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, International Finance Corporation [IFC], Asian Development Bank (ADB), and other key IFIs. Experts from these IFIs will deliver lectures. These experts may include the heads of the Tokyo offices of the IFIs. The course will also offer opportunities to acquire fundamental skill to work in IFIs – conducting international negotiation, leading an international meeting, managing conflict, presenting oponion in an international organsation….
At the end of the course, students are expected to fully understand major functions and challenges of IFIs and demonstrate skill in working there.
Students taking this course for credits must take part in all lectures, participate actively in classroom discussions, present a draft term paper on topics related to the course, and submit the final version of the term paper.

授業の方法
Each class consists of a lecture and discussion on the weekly topic. The course plan is structured with short documents published by IFIs and documents prepared by Professor Kawai. Half of the lectures would be presented by guest lecturers from IFIs who have in-depth knowledge and experience of their institutions.
Students are required to read documents listed in the reading list before the class, and are expected to participate actively in the classroom discussion.
In addition, each student is requested to write a term paper. Students have an opportunity to make a presentation of their idea to the class so that they can incorporate comments from others into their term paper.
成績評価方法
Each student will be assessed as follows:
50% - class attendance and contribution to class discussion
50% - production of a term paper

履修上の注意
Both MPP/IP and non-MPP/IP students are welcome. The course focuses on both of theory and practice of IFIs. Students who are interested in working for an international organisation are encouraged to register. Students taking this course for credits must attend all lectures, participate actively in classroom discussions, present a draft term paper on topics related to the course, and submit the final version of the term paper.
