Life and Language in the 21st Century)

私たちは、息をするのと同じくらい自然に言語を話しながら生活しています。しかし、日常生活からメディア、政治に至るまで、ありとあらゆる場面で言語は私たちの生活に大きな影響を与えているのです。この授業では、言語と社会とのつながりについて、東京カレッジの３つの研究テーマ（「内から見た日本、外から見た日本」、「2050年の人文学」、「デジタル革命と人類の未来」）と関連づけながら学びます。そして、言語学という分野を通して、多国籍、多言語社会への取り組み、人文科学の未来など、２１世紀の世界に不可欠な様々なトピックについて話し合いましょう。

▶ 言語学、社会言語学、認知言語学の概念と用語の基本的的なレベルで理解すること
▶ 学際的な視点から言語に関連するローカルおよびグローバルな問題を議論することができますこと
▶ あなた自身の分野で言語の特徴と言語の問題について議論することができること


We often use language like air – without even realizing it is there. However, from everyday life to media and politics, it is difficult to overstate how powerful language can be. In this seminar, we will explore the connection between language and life through the lens of three of the research themes of Tokyo College: Japan Viewed from Inside and Outside, Humanities in 2050, and the Digital Revolution and Future of Humanity. With linguistics as our anchor, we will consider a variety of topics, including linguistic diversity, transnationalism, and the future of humanistic thought.
　
After successfully completing this course, you will
•understand what topics are discussed by linguist today all over the world
•have a basic understanding of concepts and terminology of general linguistics, sociolinguistics and cognitive linguistics
•be able to discuss local and global issues related to language from the interdisciplinary point of view
•be able to discuss features of language and linguistic issues in your own discipline
