Calendar Mindfulness/Calendar Mindfulness: Making Room for Awareness)
Calendar Mindfulness
Calendar Mindfulness: Making Room for Awareness

How do "yohaku" (open space) and "awareness" arise?
In the first half, we begin by making a paper calendar by hand — observing closely how we use our own time, and noticing the yohaku and the unconscious patterns within it. We will also invite a guest mindfulness specialist for a session with the whole class, along with an exchange of views on this experimental course.
In the second half, we turn to tools such as Google Calendar and generative AI. Thinking together about a good balance between these tools and our own yohaku and awareness, each participant builds their own small system — a personal dashboard and a more useful Google Calendar — with the aim of running it sustainably on their own.
[Learning Objectives]
1. Make a paper calendar by hand, give time and plans a "visible shape," and observe them closely
2. Notice the yohaku and unconscious patterns within their own time, and put them into their own words
3. Be aware of how digital tools and generative AI affect their time and attention, and try out their own ways of keeping distance from them or living with them
4. Work through — individually, in groups, and as a whole class — how we should judge whether "the convenience of tools" truly gives us yohaku and awareness
[Structure]
The first half centres on making paper calendars and Slow Looking, engaging with yohaku and awareness without relying on tools. In the second half, we safely try out Google Calendar, Google Apps Script (GAS), and generative AI in an environment prepared so that no specialised knowledge is needed. Working from a shared template, each person builds a personal dashboard suited to them. Since tools and code are handled using generative AI, no programming experience is required. The whole class will also build a Google Calendar containing the University of Tokyo academic calendar together.
This is the first time the course is offered. There is not yet a foundation for the personal dashboards, and we may not reach a finished version — but building that foundation together with participants is part of what this first offering sets out to explore. The instructor, Kashima, is not an expert in programming or AI either. Can we, without specialised knowledge, work together with one another and with generative AI to build a calendar system that is safe, simple, and gives us yohaku and awareness? This course is where we find out together.
