Lessons from a Tea Cup: Toward a Holistic View Connecting Science, Culture, and the Senses
Transcending time and space, pursuing universality, and embracing diversity, freely traversing academic disciplines, beginning with a teacup in everyday life, our holistic challenge continues.
==================================================================

An ordinary teacup and hot water — things we rarely stop to notice. Starting from physicist Torahiko Terada's essay "Lesson from a Tea Cup/Chawan-no-yu/ちゃわんのゆ/茶碗の湯", we look closely at everyday things and explore the essence hidden in them through hands-on work and experiments. The course values a holistic view: connecting knowledge across fields, balancing intellect and sensitivity, and nurturing many-sided awareness. Our main aim is to cultivate Terada's way of seeing — perceiving the essence of familiar things — through observation, experiment, and exchange.

[Learning Objectives]
1. Raise their own questions about everyday things and explain them in their own words, based on observation and experiment
2. Describe one object from several viewpoints — science, technology, culture, history — and connect them into a holistic account
3. Record their own process of AI-assisted writing and evaluation, and design and explain how they use these tools
4. Take in feedback from others (classmates, guests, outside collaborators, AI) and revise their essay and questions
5. Keep enough room to enjoy the work, the exchange, and the time spent together

[Structure]
The course runs in an *Object-Based Learning* style. We begin with *Slow Looking*, taking time to observe familiar objects and phenomena closely, then move through analysis and inquiry, changing subjects as we go, while each person searches for their own question. This season we widen our focus from hot water, light, water, and tea to the teacup, and further to stone and words, guided along the way by our guest speakers.

[Guests] Lessons from:
Hiroki Kataoka (Noritake Co.) #ceramics
Mayumi Hori (environmental chemistry) #water
Toshio Torii (physics) #light
Tom Gally (language, translation) #words
Shigehiko Tateno (Tatenoito, Earth and Planetary Science) #stone

[Notes]
Essay and rubric writing are done in class. There is generally no homework. Please bring a device with text input and internet access.

===EN=== This course has two main parts. Experiments, experiences, and lectures: Building on Terada's essay Chawan-no-yu, we take up familiar subjects through hands-on work and experiences. In 2026, our themes include water, light, tea, vessels (utsuwa), stone, and words. The content is safe and beginner-friendly, and humanities students are very welcome. What matters here is not how many technical terms you already know, but how deeply you think. The design reflects feedback from past participants. Final phase (Rubric Cube — exploring AI through essay writing): Reflecting on our experiments and observations, and using Chawan-no-yu as a model, we work on Terada-style thinking. Specifically: (1) make a rubric for the essay, (2) write a new essay based on it, (3) evaluate that essay. We call this repeated cycle the "Rubric Cube," and share it within the class. Generative AI may be used. One challenge is experimental: which ways of using AI can produce an essay that carries the intended feeling? Unexpected uses of AI are also welcome, by arrangement. To encourage many-sided thinking, translating essays into other languages is also recommended (machine translation and AI allowed, if you keep a record of your work).
===EN=== ⓪ Experiences, experiments, lectures: Held in the first and middle part of the term. In-person participation is preferred for a better experience. Activities are safe and beginner-friendly — take part, and observe closely. See "Objectives / Overview" for this season's guests. ① Problem-finding and solving (individual, group, sharing): Guests set tasks for group work. If you become interested in another direction, you may pursue it individually or in a group after consulting us. Answers are submitted via Google Forms, so please bring a device you're comfortable typing on. Answers are shared with the class anonymously, either right away or the following week. ② Rubric Cube: Evaluating a science essay and making a rubric, writing a new essay, and evaluating it — done with generative AI, and repeated while incorporating feedback from the instructor and classmates. ③ Mainly in-class work: All of the above happens during class time. No homework, but if you want to go further, we offer more advanced material and support during the lunch break before class. The course is mainly in person. If you are unwell or have other circumstances, please consult the instructor at any time.
