U.S. Diplomacy toward Asia
This is a seminar-style course that will address major themes relating to contemporary U.S. diplomacy in Asia. The objective of this course is threefold: (A) to gain knowledge of U.S. foreign policy perspectives on contemporary diplomatic issues in Asia, (B) to develop a realistic appreciation of the intricacies of U.S. foreign policy-making, and (C) to hone skills of exploiting insights from theoretical analysis of international relations.

The following is a tentative schedule -- it could be modified based on how U.S. foreign policy in Asia evolves. 1) Introduction 2) An overview of U.S. Engagement since the Second World War 3) The Structure of East Asian International Relations 4) The Dynamics of U.S. Relations with China Part 1 -- The Tension-Stabilization Cycle 5) The Dynamics of U.S. Relations with China Part 2 -- The Emergence of Great Power Competition 6) U.S. Competition with China Part 1 -- The Defense and Industrial Dimensions 7) U.S. Competition with China Part 2 -- The Geo-political and Geo-economic Dimensions 8) The Dynamics of U.S. Relations with the Korean Peninsula -- North Korean Denuclearization and U.S. Diplomacy 9) The Dynamics of U.S. Relations with Southeast Asia -- From the Rebalance to the Free and Open Indo-Pacific 10) The Dynamics of U.S. Relations with South Asia -- U.S.-Indian Relations Today 11) The Dynamics of U.S. Relations with Japan -- The State of the Alliance and its Prospects 12) U.S. Grand Strategy, Domestic Politics, and the Future of U.S.-Asian Relations 13) Conclusion
授業の方法
Each participant will make a presentation(s) on assigned materials designated by the instructor. A discussion topic relevant to the presentation will be assigned, and the participants will be asked to write a one-page reaction paper to organize their thoughts on the discussion topic. Discussion among participants will take place during the first half of the following week’s session. If registered participants exceed 20, an alternative format could be introduced based on the instructor's judgment.
成績評価方法
Quality of presentation of assigned materials, contribution to class discussion, and short reaction papers for individual sessions.
