Introduction to Japanese Law
Introduction to Japanese Law
This course will help students understand the fundamentals of law in contemporary Japan.
Students will gain at least a foundational grasp of the origins of Japanese law, and the key concepts that shape it today, both in isolation and in their social context.
Students will learn to consider core areas of Japanese critically, discuss their perspectives with others, and draw on comparisons with other legal systems as needed.
The course assumes no knowledge of Japanese law or law in general.

授業の方法
The class will be interactive, mixing lecture-style content with in-class presentations and class discussion on the reading materials assigned for each week.
成績評価方法
10% Class performance
15% In-class presentation (Weeks 5-13)
25% Short Report (undergraduate students need only refer to the course materials)
50% Long Report (undergraduate students need only write concerning Japan)
Evaluation standards will be adjusted for each student's level of academic experience.
Typically, expectations will be higher for graduate students and lower for undergraduate students.

Course materials will be provided via ITC-LMS.

Reference materials will be provided via ITC-LMS as necessary.
履修上の注意
The course will be conducted entirely in English. A good level of spoken and written English is required to perform well.

An 'office hours' session will be conducted online at a set time each week via Zoom.
All students (and undergraduate students in particular) will be most welcome to drop in to these sessions to receive timely advice while planning and preparing their presentations and reports
