Savouring Oscar Wilde's Comedy: The Importance of Being Earnest
The aim of the course is to develop students' English skills in an integrated way by focusing on the original text of Oscar Wilde's famous farcical comedy The Importance of Being Earnest (1895). Typical of Wilde's works, this classic play uses sharp wit and absurd humour to satirise the hypocrisy and superficiality of Victorian upper-class society. In each class, we will focus on a few scenes from the play, read the text aloud in roles, watch a clip from a film adaptation, analyse the text, and engage in group discussion. The weekly assignment will be to write a short reflection or reaction on the scenes read and discussed in the previous class. For the final evaluation, each student will be required to choose either a scene performance (playing one character in one scene, with the lines memorised) or a three-minute speech (also without any notes or other memory aids). There will also be a short translation test at the end of the course.
