全学自由研究ゼミナール(PEAK)(Introduction to Earth Science) (Introduction to Physical Sciences)

Introduction to Physical Sciences
Please note that although the main title of this course is Earth Science, the curriculum has changed as of S-semester 2024 (the formal title change will be applied later).

In this course, we cover some key topics across the physical sciences to help ensure students who have studied differing amounts of chemistry and physics in high school are on the same page.

授業計画
Sessions 1-3 : The course will begin with a brief overview of the key domains of physics and chemistry and also consider the important role of mathematics. Sessions 4-6 : We will study some key mathematical concepts that are essential for use in the study of physics and chemistry. We will review basic calculus and complex numbers and look at important examples of their applications in scientific contexts. Sessions 7-9 ; We will review some essential ideas from classical physics which will be of importance in the Introductory physics and introductory chemistry courses in the A-semester. In particular we will revisit units and dimensionality, projectile motion, and waves and the electromagnetic spectrum. Session 10-13 : We will conclude the course with a look at the important role of Energy in both chemistry and physics and study basic thermodynamics, with an emphasis on chemical thermodynamics.
授業の方法
The classes will be largely taught by a combination of interactive lectures and group-based problem solving activities supplemented by online electronic quizzes to monitor understanding and progress.
成績評価方法
Grades for the course will be awarded based on attendance and participation in the group work activities (30%), performance in live online quizzes (10%), short written assignments (10% and a final exam (50%).
履修上の注意
This course is a required course for first year PEAK Environmental Science students. This means that is it taught and assessed entirely in English. Please note that due to in class quizzes and group based activities, attendance is required at all sessions to obtain maximum score for credit.
