本講義は、Human-Computer Interaction(HCI)の観点から、Virtual Reality(VR)、Augmented Reality(AR)、Diminished Reality(DR)、Mixed Reality(MR)など、総称してxRと呼ばれる技術領域を扱う。 This course explores the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) with a focus on Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Diminished Reality (DR), and Mixed Reality (MR), collectively referred to as xR. In addition to traditional interaction paradigms, the course introduces emerging perspectives such as Human-Computer Integration and Human-AI Integration, highlighting the shift from interaction to deeper forms of integration between humans, computational systems, and AI. From the viewpoint of redesigning the body, perception, and space, the course examines both theoretical foundations and practical implementations of xR and human augmentation technologies. Key questions include: What does the digital transformation (DX) of the body and space entail, and how does it reshape human perception and behavior? How can VR and human augmentation technologies create social value, and what ethical and institutional challenges do they raise? What limitations does the current concept of the metaverse face, and how can it be re-envisioned through new design principles? With the rise of Human-AI Integration, how should systems be designed where humans are partially or entirely outside the control loop? How are research outcomes translated into real-world applications through startups and industry initiatives? The course combines lectures on state-of-the-art research with guest talks and discussions on real-world implementations, aiming to provide an integrated understanding of HCI, xR, and human augmentation.
This course adopts a combined lecture and discussion format. In the first half of each session, the instructor and invited guest speakers present lectures on recent research trends and practical applications in HCI, xR, human augmentation, as well as Human-Computer Integration and Human-AI Integration. In the second half, students engage in discussions based on the topics and questions introduced in the lecture, fostering critical thinking and multi-perspective understanding. Short student presentations or response comments may be assigned when appropriate. By iterating between lectures and discussions, the course emphasizes connecting theoretical concepts with real-world contexts.
Grading is based on a final report and contributions to class discussions throughout the course. The final report is evaluated in terms of depth of understanding, originality of perspective, and clarity of logical structure regarding the topics covered in the course. Contributions to discussions are assessed based on the quality and frequency of participation, as well as the ability to engage constructively with others’ ideas.
No specific pre-class or post-class preparation is required. However, students are expected to actively participate in in-class discussions. They should contribute their own ideas and engage constructively with the perspectives of others.
