Information, Technology, and Society in Asia 426

<<Solarpunk Lab>> Climate collapse, AI takeover, World War 3 – recent developments make it seem as if various kinds of apocalyptic futures are all we get to choose from. Solarpunk is an aesthetic, genre of fiction, and emerging social movement that offers a very different storyline: a hopeful, positive future where technology is in service of ecology and humans live in harmony and community with nature and each other. Join this experimental lab if you want to engage with the ideas and stories of solarpunk to imagine positive futures together. Please note that this is not a regular seminar. While we will read solarpunk-inspired fiction, engage with ecocentric philosophies and learn about regenerative design, the core stance of this course is not critical but creative: structured along the four action verbs imagine, experience, research, and act, this course will challenge you to develop your own attitudes, ideas, and practices for a livable future. Before deciding to join this course please read two introductory articles on solarpunk: Compost Modernity! on Aeon and What is Solarpunk? On Builtin and make sure this is something you actively want to immerse yourself in and experiment with for a semester. Based on the learning outcomes below, you will create a learning portfolio that goes beyond a traditional term paper and will require self-directed imagination, action and reflection on top of research.
After completing this laboratory, you will have learnt to
- imagine and care about positive futures for humanity and our planet
- understand ecocentric fiction and philosophy, its critique of modernity and the alternatives it proposes
- experience and relate to life, nature and community in new ways
- research current developments in green tech and agriculture and experiments in co-existence
- take action in your own life, communities and environments towards realizing solarpunk futures that align with your values and imagination

授業計画
The first part of the course will make structured offerings on reading and experiencing ecocentric visions of the future together. We will read selected solarpunk fiction and ecocritical literature such as Becky Chambers’ A Psalm for the wild-built and Bill Plotkin’s Nature and the Human Soul and engage in low-threshold nature learning. This will create a foundation for you to explore your own imagination and hopes for the future. The second part of this lab will employ principles of regenerative design to encourage you to further develop these visions in self-directed ways that will include research on current trends in green tech and ecocentric social experiments as well capacity-building so you can act on your values and visions in your own life and communities.
授業の方法
reading and discussion, creative exercises, nature learning, small group and collaborative work, mini lectures
成績評価方法
Assessment will be based 100% on a learning portfolio to be submitted at the end of the semester that demonstrates your work in the four areas imagine, experience, research and action, with a self-selected topic and focus within the framework of solarpunk futures. All course work between sessions during the semester will be ungraded and is designed in a way that will allow you to practice and prepare for the portfolio submission step by step.
