Social media studies: Instagram
With more than 2 billion active users and tie-ins with other apps of its mother company Meta, Instagram is one of the biggest and most influential social media platforms. In this seminar we will study the platform and its contemporary relevance from the perspective of software studies and media studies.

We will begin with a general introduction to concepts and approaches in social media studies before exploring the history and development of Instagram, its functionality, and its social and cultural impact. We will also discuss social media research methods and read studies that use Instagram as a data source.

A particular focus will be on how Instagram works as a type of knowledge regime: the ways in which the interface and algorithm presents and organizes knowledge; the knowledge users need to utilize its functionalities and reach audiences; and the various types and genres of content it enables. There will be room for comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives based on participants’ research interests.
