Information, Technology, and Society in Asia 415

Science and Technology Studies (STS)
Science and technology studies (STS) is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of science and technology (S&T) and their relationship with human beings and the societies, polities and cultures they inhabit. The course thus explores the central – if not determining – role of S&T in modern societies by providing a critical analysis of the philosophical, sociological, political, economic and ethical conditions and choices they confront us with.

授業計画
There are two objectives to Science and Technology Studies, viz., to enhance knowledge (objectives 1-2) as well as to develop some key abilities (objectives 3-4). At the end of the course, students should be able to: 1) grasp the central role of S&T – both positive and negative – in the modern world and articulate the competing visions of the relationship between society and technology, as well as their dynamic interaction; 2) appreciate the politics of the technologies that impinge upon the human being and the cultural transformations they induce; 3) elucidate to what extent theories enable us to understand and explain practices (instead of simply learning facts and values); 4) analyse complex ideas and to apply them pragmatically, as well as to disentangle the nuances of sophisticated language and arguments.
授業の方法
Please watch the video lecture BEFORE class each week - starting with the very first class, with the link to the videos provided on UTOL - and note down any questions you have, clarifications you require, points that are unclear or problems you have with the content, which we can discuss at the start of the class. The video lectures contextualise the seminar readings and are the springboard for various in-class interactive activities, as well as short, weekly multiple choice question quizzes.
成績評価方法
Depending on the number of students who enrol in the course: Short Response Paper (20%) Research Paper (50%) Participation (20%) Presentation (10%)

履修上の注意
Whilst a familiarity with the positive sciences (broadly, the life and natural, as well as engineering, sciences) and some of the normative sciences (viz. the social sciences and humanities), especially economics, sociology, philosophy, political science or cultural studies, would be of benefit, it is not imperative. There are therefore no formal academic prerequisites for the course, although all previous knowledge is useful, though none is assumed. Instead, students should be open to an interdisciplinary approach to the enigma of S&T in modernity.
