Course Goals:
With the completion of this course, students will be able to learn the following. 1) comprehend the way of thinking in media literacy, which is interdisciplinary knowledge and practice with a focus on media as an agent for communication, 2) bodily understand the wisdom of media literacy, and 3) learn the minimum knowledge to design workshops as an academic method. This year, the keyword of the course will be "mobile media."

Course Description:
This course consists of two streams: lectures & reading literature, and video watching & workshops. Lecture and reading will cover a wide range of topics, including media literacy, media history, ideas and theories on media and communication, and media expressions necessary to cope with various problems associated with the contemporary media ecology in Japan.
In this course of 2020, the main topic will be mobile media such as smartphones, cell phones, and tablets. Mobile media will be the symbolic keyword that magnetizes theories, practices, and other media literacy topics.
Workshops and video watching will be opportunities for students to understand the above topics bodily by participating in and designing workshops as academic methodologies.
There will be four group works, including video watching and workshops. Those two streams will be integrated and crystallized as the wisdom of media literacy in the last part of the course.
