Fundamentals of Information Technologies

This course is designed to help each student who has no or little technical background to acquire basic knowledge, skills, and self-confidence which are necessary to live as a responsible citizen in this information age and to have a foundation for better understand of problems in modern Asian societies that are increasingly dependent on information and communication technologies. Recent advancement of smartphones, AI, and various cloud services has made it much easier to use the fruits of these technologies, but to use them appropriately and securely, it is essential to understand the underlying technologies and systems that are not directly visible. This course aims to deepen this understanding through lectures accompanied by hands-on sessions.

The first class is planned to be held in the classroom from 14:55 on April 6, 2026 JST. However, due to unavoidable circumstances, there is a possibility that it may be changed with prior notices by email (and other possible means). The ITASIA M1 students, for whom this course is mandatory, are requested to complete the registration of this course on UTAS in advance. Their number this year is pretty large, so it will be difficult to accept other students. Other GSII students who still wish to take this course are requested to send an email to the course email address shown on this page as early as possible, by 13:00 on April 6 at the latest. 履修上の注意

This course is provided in principle for the ITASIA program's students at the GSII. For those enrolled in the ITASIA Master's program, this course is one of the required courses. Bringing your own Wi-Fi ready PC to the classroom is indispensable. Active participation in the classroom is the most important. Review is recommended for a better understanding. For some topics, preparation will be explicitly instructed.
