Information, Technology, and Society in Asia 323

Issues and Methods in Cultural Anthropology and Ethnography: Ethnographic Studies on Japan in English and in Japanese: An Introduction
In this class, I would like to introduce various ethnographic insights of Japan by critically examining ethnographies written in English and Japanese, and to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the diversity of Japanese studies based on anthropological fieldwork by showing the various cleavages that exist between English and Japanese literature and among multiple (sub)disciplines. The focus will not be on "nihonjin-ron" but on arguments based on empirical research on specific socio-cultural situations.
