Media Ethnography: Filmmaking for Fieldwork
This course maps the growing field of visual and media ethnography focusing on theoretical and practical aspects related to photography and film in scientific research. The course seeks to understand and present academic research about social life and human culture in the globalized worlds using a combination of scientific research methods and artistic cinematography. Students will carry out "mini-fieldwork” in everyday life context and record audio-visual data using a camera and microphone during the course. After the fieldwork, sessions of screenings of rushes will be held where students will view each other’s work for open discussions. The recorded materials are then will be edited by the students into a conceptual narrative that emerges from the process of filmmaking in the specific context of the fieldwork. At the end of this course, the students should be able to produce ethnographic/transcultural documentary films by utilizing their own fieldwork audio-visual data. By arranging films screening, the course also provides theoretical and practical knowledge to analyze the basis of film form, montage, and editing processes.
