Information, Technology, and Society in Asia 301

Introduction to Social Research
When you try to understand Asian societies and cultures, you have to use some method(s) of social survey to get data. There are some types of research, but which type(s) should be used? What do you have to keep in mind when you conduct a questionnaire survey in foreign countries? How should you manage your fieldwork in different cultures?
In this course, the students are requested to learn the process of both qualitative and quantitative analysis of social survey through lectures and workshops. Both interview and computer work are compulsory in this class so that participants can have an overall picture of what should be done to collect and process the data necessary for their research in different cultures and write a good survey report.
This class in a “gateway” for conducting social research by yourself.

授業の方法
Combination of lecture and workshop. At a time of lecture, some students will be assigned to present a summary of each chapter so that they can understand methodological issues smoothly. Students are requested to take part in the class ardently.
