"Reinventing Japan" and rethinking area studies
This course is intended to familiarize students with basic concepts of cultural studies and particularly encourage them to think of the significance of engaging in area studies, especially those focused on nation-state based studies. The course uses Tessa Morris-Suzuki's book, "Re-Inventing Japan," and reads other relevant articles, including non-Japan related studies.

授業計画
The course will progress in accordance with the chapter sequence of the book "Re-Inventing Japan" by Tessa Morris-Suzuki. Details will be provided on the first day of the class.
授業の方法
This is a discussion based class. Students are required to come prepared to actively participate in the discussion, which will be based on assigned reading materials. Details will be provided on the first day of the class.
成績評価方法
Attendance, participation, reading reports, and final paper. Details will be provided on the first day of the class.
教科書
Tessa Morris-Suzuki, Re-Inventing Japan: Time, Space, Nation (M.E. Sharpe, 1998). This is available through Amazon (including Kindle) and is also easily found in the university libraries. You may also use the Japanese translation of this book published by Ibunsha (日本を再発見する）. Other readings will be assigned. Details will be provided on the first day of the class.

履修上の注意
This is NOT a Japan studies course and no speciality in Japan Studies is required. Rather it is a course that critically considers the meaning of area-based studies. Regular attendance is expected.
