Information, Technology, and Society in Asia 146

This course provides an overview of China’s political system. The core questions to be addressed include: how has the nature of China’s political system changed over time?; how has the Chinese Communist Party managed to stay in power while facing a rapidly changing society?; what are the sources for the system’s resilience?; what are the prospects for democratization and political reform? We will begin with a brief historical overview of China’s political developments from 1949 to present. The remainder of the course will examine the key challenges facing the current and future Party leadership.
In addition to enhancing understandings of the structure and processes of contemporary Chinese politics, this course aims to familiarize students with prominent theories of authoritarian politics. Among the topics this course will examine in the Chinese context are: factionalism, elite bargains and power-sharing, corruption; political participation; contentious politics; censorship and manipulation.

履修上の注意
Attending class is firmly required. I am not indifferent to whether you are there or not. There are good reasons to be wary of skipping class. I deduct all participation points after three unexcused absences (a doctor's notice will be required for an excused absence) and this can have serious implications for a student's overall grade in the class.
