Grading
Two or more faculty members participate in the Seminar.
The GPSS-GLI Student Seminar is a required course. Any student who fails this course will be unable to advance in the program.
GPSS-GLI faculty members grade every student according to the following three criteria:
1) Attendance Punctuality (required)
2) Presentation Content, performance, handling of questions
3) Discussion Earnestness, quality of comments and questions
Evaluation will be based on Pass/Fail, however, we may also give “Caution” to those who are not performing very well. If you receive “Fail”, then you cannot advance the course.
Regarding attendance, a “fail” grade is automatically given to any student who attends less than 80 percent of the scheduled seminars, with the exception of approved absences or illnesses.
Student grades are determined by consensus among the attending faculty members.
In principle, absences are approved only when absence from the GPSS-GLI Student Seminar is unavoidable due to research activities (e.g., fieldwork or attending professional meetings or symposia). Only advisors may request approval for absences; no requests directly from students will be accepted. In the case of sickness or illness, a letter explaining the situation is required.
