Theory on Ship Propulsive Performance

This course aims to acquire basic knowledge for estimating the resistance and the performance of the propulsor that generates the thrust to overcome the resistance. This basic knowledge is indispensable for the design of ships, AUVs, and robots that move both around the sea surface and in the sea. The course consists of the following three parts
(1) Hull resistance
overview of resistance and propulsive performance analysis
fundamentals of fluid dynamics
similarity law
tank test method
computational fluid dynamics and its application to the ship hydrodynamics field, etc.
(2) Propulsive performance
the basic theory of marine propellers
performance estimation methods for marine propellers
self-propulsion factors
power estimation, etc.
(3) Performance in actual seas
the performance when a ship navigates in actual seas that is different in calm sea
the relationship between performance in actual seas and hull form
how to improve the propulsive efficiency in operations
trends in performance in actual seas and international regulations, etc.
