Long term and short term statistics of ocean waves, wave generation and measurement in the wave tank
The wind-generated ocean waves are affected by both local and remote wind fields, and therefore, depend on the geographical location. In the lecture, based on the long-term statistics, the extreme wave condition expected within the life-time of ocean structures and ships will be estimated. From that, a time series of surface elevation will be estimated based on short-term statistics. In the experiment, waves are generated based on the estimated time series considering the transfer function of the wave maker. The measured time series will be analysed to estimate the histogram of the surface elevation, frequency spectrum, and significant values.
Accuracy evaluation of high-rate GNSS data
Laser and acoustic measurements from platforms such as aircraft/UAV (air) and vessel/AOV (sea level) require continuous precision positioning of the equipment. Dedicated equipment and analysis methods are used to acquire GNSS (generic names such as GPS and QZSS) data with a cm accuracy of over 1 Hz. In this experiment, continuous position data is acquired using a dual-frequency GNSS receiver/antenna, and we discuss its accuracy.
Experiment and numerical simulation of thin plate buckling
A thin plate structure is employed in many structures, such as automobiles, ships, and aircrafts, for reducing their weights. In these structures, buckling caused by compression is one of the most major problems in the safety design. In this lecture, the outline of buckling theory of a plate is taught. The related experiment and finite element analysis are then conducted as exercises.
Towing tank experiment and estimation of hull resistance using the similarity law
In the lecture, an estimation method of ship hull resistance is taught, such as the type of flow resistance, the Buckingham π theorem, the similarity law of Froude, friction resistance coefficient according to formula of Schoenherr. Then, a towing tank test using a model ship is conducted to predict the resistance of the actual ship using the similarity law.
Measurement floating body response in Waves
"Input" an operation signal for a system, when an "output" the amount of system changes accordingly, representation of the relationship between inputs and outputs of that system is the transfer function (Transfer function). In particular, with respect to the input of periodically varying system, the frequency response function of the relationship between the input and output of each input frequency (Frequency Response Function: FRF) say. In this experiment to measure the floating body response in Waves, asked the floating body of the frequency response function, consider the response characteristics of the floating body.
