Management and Policy Studies of Sustainability
The purpose of this graduate course is to expose students to understand the basic concepts and framework of public policy and governance as well as practical issues relating to sustainability in general; biodiversity conservation, rural development, poverty alleviation, peace-building, etc. The students will have an opportunity to learn the basic frameworks for analyzing policies and to deepen the understanding of management and policy concerns relating to sustainable development through interactive lectures.

Targeted learning outcomes are: (i) conceptual understanding of policies and policy-making relating to sustainability and (ii) increased familiarity with practical aspects of management and policy concerns relating to sustainable development, especially the need for a holistic viewpoint and trans-boundary, collaborative approach.

Due to COVID-19, the schedule and contents will be changed. Those who wish to take this course, please contact Dr Tanaka ***** by April 13. Please clarify your name, affiliation, and academic background (e.g. engineering, internaitonal studies, public policy, etc. ). Also, please let me know if you are ready to use ZOOM. I will establish a mailing list and deliver required readings and homeworks by April 27. Lecture will start in May for the time being, however, there will be major modification. 授業の方法
At the initial session, the instructor will provide a general course orientation and engage the students in a discussion of their respective outcome expectations. There will be lectures, readings and class discussions to help students construct conceptual frameworks for systematic analysis of policies and policy-making/implementation relating to sustainable development. The students will hear lectures and read literatures on the basics of public policy, including its concepts and methodology, and concerning specific cases of policy development, such as nature conservation and resource management.
成績評価方法
In this course, the students will be evaluated by; participation, weekly homework (writing a report and/or giving a short presentation related to required readings), and final exam. On the whole, this course will be run in an interactive manner expecting active participation by the students. Final exam might be changed to Final Report due to COVID-19.

It is recommended to take "Negotiation and Consensus Building for Sustainability" by Prof Onuki which is offered after this course (from June 8) so that you can aquire two credits.
