統計学と定量分析の基礎

Introduction to Statistics and Quantitative Analysis 統計学と定量分析の基礎
1. Objective
The objective of this course is to learn how to conduct statistical/econometric analysis using data and interpret the results appropriately, through theoretical coursework and computer exercises.

2. Overview
1) In this course, students will learn statistic and econometric methods of quantitative analysis efficiently, through a combination of theoretical coursework and computer exercises in class and for homework. Our particular focus is on multivariate regression analysis that estimates effects of explanatory variables (e.g., the amount of foreign aid) on outcome variables (e.g., growth rate of per capita income). More detailed contents of the course will be show in the time schedule below.

2) This course is primarily for students who have not learned any undergraduate-level statistics or econometrics and will not cover graduate-level statistics or econometrics. Mathematics at the high-school level, but not more than that, is required. Students who have already taken undergraduate-level statistics or econometrics and would like to learn more advanced methods and topics are advised to take graduate-level courses in the Graduate School of Economics in the Hongo Campus.

3) Language used in this course will be English. However, students may ask questions and write homework and the final exam in Japanese.

成績評価方法
1. Lab Homework (30%) After each lab session, students will be assigned homework to practice STATA (due: one week after the session). 2. Final exam (70%) The final exam will be on July 27 (Monday). This will cover all the course materials, including lectures and lab sessions and is held in-person only.
履修上の注意
1. Students are expected to attend lectures and labs in-person in Lecture Room 7, Environ. Bldg., Kashiwanoha Campus. However, if students cannot come to the Lecture part (NOT Lab part) due to other courses they are enrolled in other campuses immediately before or after the class periods, they may attend online. 2. We use computers in lab sessions. Thus, students who do not have a lap-top computer should borrow one at the Office of the Department of International Studies. 3. In this course, a statistical software named Stata will be used. Students need to submit the signed Stata License Use Agreement Form to obtain access to the software and install it by the 1st computer exercise. More details will be given in class on the first lecture. 4. After the completion of this course, students should immediately un-install Stata from your computer and it will be checked by instructors on July 27. This will be a pre-requisite to submit the Data Analysis Project. 5. Students should read relevant chapters in Wooldridge (or 田中 in Japanese) to prepare for the class and review the lectures.
