Material Cycles and Social Systems
Where do the things we use and discard in our daily lives end up, and how are they handled? How should consumers, businesses, social institutions, and the international community change in order to achieve more desirable material cycles?
Starting from these questions, this course analyzes material cycles as a social system in which international trade, policy frameworks, corporate behavior, and consumer choices interact with one another. The aim is to develop the ability to analyze these systems structurally and to propose improvements — going beyond mere knowledge of technologies and regulations.
Students will learn through a combination of lectures, report writing, and discussion, drawing on case studies and data across three themes: the cross-border movement of waste and recyclable resources, domestic recycling policy, and consumer behavior and lifestyles.
