Fusion Science Special Lecture Ⅰ

1. Progress and perspective of fusion energy development 2. Progress of the fusion plasma science 3. Diagnostics for high temperature plasmas in fusion devices using electromagnetic waves ? 4. New physics from advanced imaging diagnostics in toroidal devices.
Objective of this class is to study fusion energy development as sustainable clean energy to meet the worldwide effort on carbon free plan (https://www.iea.org/*****). Long history of failure/success of the fusion research since discovery of the energy source of the stars and sun and demonstration of the fusion power on earth (H-bomb) will be reviewed. Furthermore, the progress of fusion energy research using magnetic confinement and inertial confinement will be studied. For the physics study of magnetohydrodynamics and turbulence-based transport, diagnostic methods to quantify the physical dynamics of the high temperature plasmas are introduced including the recent progress of 2D/3D imaging diagnostics that have revealed an unprecedented clear picture of the non-linear dynamics.

授業計画
Delivery of the lectures will be within 7 lectures (in average, it will be ~two lectures in a month) in the summer semester. 授業日は,現在のところ,4/7, 4/14, 4/21, 5/12, 6/9, 6/16, 6/23の予定で,変更がある場合はアナウンス致します。 会場についてはその都度アナウンスしますが,4月7日は本郷・工学部10号館2階会議室,柏・2D8教室を用います。Park先生がどちらか一方に行かれますので,行かれなかったキャンパスについてはオンラインとなります。 https://u-tokyo-ac-jp.zoom.us/*****
授業の方法
In-person lecture will be the basis but on-line lecture will be combined if necessary.
成績評価方法
Grade will be based on the term report. The topic of the term report will be on Evolution of the magnetic fusion research. The Content of the report should include: 1) Carbon free 2050 plan (https://www.iea.org/*****) and rational of the continuing the fusion energy research – 2 pages. 2) History and evolution of the magnetic fusion devices (ex. Pinch (https://en.wikipedia.org/*****(fusion_reactor)) to ITER (https://www.iter.org/*****) ) – 4-5 pages. 3) Perspective of fusion for future clean energy source – 2 pages.

The basis of the lecture will be “Lecture files” available prior to each class and textbooks like “Tokamak by J. Wessen, Cambridge press”
参考書
“Introduction to Plasma Physics and controlled fusion by F.F. Chen”, and relevant websites (i.e., ITER (https://www.iter.org/*****)), etc.
履修上の注意
The lecture notes will be the basis and students are encouraged to find more information through relevant papers, textbooks and websites for each keyword and concept learned in the class. The students who took basic Electro-magnetism course and Modern physics (atomic physics) or have equivalent knowledge should be able to understand the contents and will have no problem following the lecture. If other information for understanding of the lecture materials is needed, you can request guidance at anytime.
