(Special Lecture Clinical Pharmaceutical Science )
This course aims to provide an integrated understanding of the continuum from elucidation of disease mechanisms to drug discovery, translational research, clinical implementation, and decision-making in real-world healthcare settings. In addition, through the theoretical framework of Kampo medicine—including its worldview, interpretation of the human body, and diagnostic and therapeutic systems—students will examine fundamental perspectives on how diseases and the human body are conceptualized. Using neurodegenerative disorders and rare diseases (including ultra-rare conditions) as primary examples, students will explore the connections among pathophysiological research, patient registry development, and pharmaceutical innovation within a translational research framework. Case studies such as HTLV-1–associated myelopathy (HAM) and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) will illustrate the role of natural history studies and registry-based approaches in clinical trial design and drug development. Furthermore, through perspectives from hospital pharmacy practice, the course will address how drug discovery outcomes are evaluated, selected, and implemented in clinical settings, and will discuss future directions for translating scientific advances into societal impact.
