医学共通講義XXXII
EPIDEMIOLOGY FOR HEALTH RESEARCH.
This course provides students with a foundational understanding of the principles of epidemiology and the epidemiological methods commonly used in medical and public health research. Students will learn how health and disease are measured, how associations between exposure and outcomes are evaluated, and how different study designs are applied to answer research questions.
This course aims to equip students with the epidemiological literacy needed to critically read scientific literature, interpret research findings, and support evidence-based decision making in health research and policy.
This course is designed as a complementary course to Statistics for Health Research and is strongly recommended to be taken together.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Describe and apply measures of disease frequency (incidence and prevalence) and measures of effect, including relative and absolute risk.
2. Identify and explain key challenges in interpreting epidemiological data, including chance, bias, confounding, and effect modification.
3. Explain major criteria used to access causal relationships in epidemiology.
4. Describe the basic principles and applications of common epidemiological study designs, including descriptive, ecological, cross-sectional, cohort, case-control, and intervention studies.
5. Critically assess the strengths and limitations of different epidemiological study designs.
6. Apply basic epidemiological concepts to formulate and evaluate health research questions.
7. Explain the basic concepts and purposes of systematic review and meta-analyses and interpret their main results.
8. Identify key features of sampling methods used in health surveys and assess their implications for validity and generalizability.
