This academic year, we will visit the UTokyo Chiba forest (UTCBF) located at southern coastal region in Boso peninsular, Chiba prefecture. The fieldwork focuses on: How shall we manage abandoned old plantation forests in Japan?
In Japan, after WW2, forest conversion from natural forest to plantation forest have been widely occurred for promoting timber production. But after that, so many well-qualified timbers have been imported into Japan. As a result, many plantation forests are just abandoned and getting old. In addition, several issues hindered utilization of such old plantation forests, e.g. poor road network, labor shortage, low timber price, etc.
In such situations, let's think about how to manage abandoned old plantation forests for e.g. timber production, biodiversity conservation, tourism resources, etc. through the field observation of various plantation forests on site.
