Advanced Forest Chemistry II
In the forest, plants (including trees) biosynthesize cellulosic biomass as a cell wall. Moreover, various microorganisms are known to grow on the plant cell wall as a carbon source, and the cellulosic biomasses are biodegraded by the enzymes produced by microorganisms. Cellulose and hemicellulose are the major constituent of plant cell walls are commonly referred to as a structural polysaccharide. In order to commercialize a bioprocess for producing useful substances using the structural polysaccharides as raw materials, it is important to understand how carbohydrate-related enzymes involved in cellulosic biomass degradation.
In this class, the biochemistry and molecular biology necessary to understand the properties and reactions of carbohydrate-related enzymes involved in the degradation of cellulosic biomass are studied for the basic knowledge to a wide range applications.
