Advanced Academic Writing
By the end of Advanced Academic Writing (AAW), students will be able to:
1. Develop a complete academic research paper based on their own research data or findings.
2. Understand the structure and conventions of research articles, including the organization of sections such as the introduction, literature review, methodology, results, and discussion.
3. Write clearly and persuasively for an academic audience, using appropriate academic style, tone, and discipline-specific conventions.
4. Revise and improve academic writing through feedback, including peer review, instructor feedback, and iterative drafting.
5. Develop skills in presenting research arguments, including framing research questions, situating work within existing literature, and highlighting the significance of findings.
6. Use AI tools responsibly and ethically to support academic writing, such as refining clarity, improving organization, and strengthening argumentation while maintaining academic integrity and proper authorship.

授業計画
This course is designed to help students develop the academic writing skills necessary for producing a research paper in English. Through lectures and hands-on activities, students will learn how to construct each section of a journal article—from identifying research gaps and reporting methods and results, to writing effective introductions, discussions, and abstracts.
Students will engage in activities such as analyzing disciplinary writing conventions, collaborating on peer reviews, and evaluating AI-supported writing processes. Special attention will be given to the ethical use of AI tools for academic purposes, including citation practices and the publication process.
By the end of the course, students will have completed multiple writing assignments culminating in a final draft of a research paper, and will have gained practical experience in academic communication, critical reflection, and international research publishing standards.

＜理解すべき事項＞
Students in this course are expected to have access to research results by Week 4. If you do not have access to any research results yet, please consider taking AAW in the next academic year. Alternatively, you may take Academic Writing, an introductory course offered in S1 and delivered in Japanese.

We offer two advanced academic English courses for graduate students aiming to improve their skills in academic English: Advanced Academic Writing (offered in A1) and Advanced Academic Presentation (offered in A2). The two courses are suitable for those who are preparing to submit a manuscript to a journal and to present at an international conference, but those who are new to research publication may also take the class.
Advanced Academic Writing (AAW) is open to graduate students from all schools. AAW is a prerequisite course for Advanced Academic Presentation (AAP, offered in A2). AAW involves drafting a paper based on the student's own research. Thus, students in this course are expected to have access to research results which can be used in this exercise. The instruction will be delivered in English.
