■テーマ(Theme):
Advancing a Hydrogen Society: Development of Hydrogen Liquefaction Systems
■講師(Lecturer):
KARIYA Daisuke, Fellow, Chief Executive Researcher, Technical Institute, Corporate Technology Division, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.
■概要(Summary):
One of the most significant societal challenges confronting Japan is the issue of energy. The Japanese government has established the S+3E* framework as the fundamental principle of national energy policy. Hydrogen has emerged as one of the potential solutions, and the government, industry, and academia are collectively working toward the development of a hydrogen supply chain.
In the first half of the lecture, the rationale behind hydrogen, Japan’s strategic roadmap toward a hydrogen society, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ initiatives aimed at the development of a hydrogen supply chain will be introduced. In the latter half, a hydrogen liquefier development and demonstration project—on which the lecturer served as the technical lead—is explained. The liquefier was the first industrial scale one domestically developed in Japan. Participants will be guided through the entire project from concept formulation, project planning, engineering and design, construction, and operations, through which the technical challenges, operational difficulties, accomplishments, and lessons learned by the project team are introduced.

■テーマ(Theme):
Why Blockchain technology doesn't meet our expectations for disruptive innovation
■講師(Lecturer):
MATSUO Shin’ichiro, Research Professor, Doctor of Engineering
Department of Computer Science
Georgetown University / Virginia Tech
■概要(Summary):
This lecture examines why blockchain has not lived up to its promise as a disruptive innovation, while acknowledging its genuine technical contributions. Early electronic cash research by the Bank of Japan and NTT in 90s had already achieved the prevention of double spending while preserving user privacy, yet suffered from fragility in the presence of network failures. Blockchain’s key contribution lies in improving fault tolerance by replicating ledger data across multiple nodes and achieving consensus without relying on a single point of failure. However, this design inherently entails trade-offs: the cost of consensus imposes constraints on latency and throughput, while data replication leads to inevitable state bloat. These fundamental limitations have significantly restricted the range of viable use cases. Despite this, narratives around “decentralization” and “trustlessness” have often preceded practical feasibility, leading to the widespread circulation of unrealistic expectations. Moreover, mechanisms that enable short-term speculative gains have distorted decision-making and driven the ecosystem in directions misaligned with sustainable value creation. The mismatch between startup-driven incentives for rapid growth and the long-term requirements for building robust infrastructure has further contributed to the emergence of distorted use cases.

The evolution of smartphones and AI—both essential to our daily lives—has been driven by advances in logic semiconductor technology. This lecture begins with an overview of the technological progression of logic semiconductors, focusing on device scaling and the transition toward 3D structures. It then examines the changes in the global business environment and the structure of the logic semiconductor industry, while reflecting on the current position of Japan’s semiconductor industry, which once dominated the world. Finally, the lecture introduces the technological and business prospects of Rapidus, a Japan-led initiative aiming to reach the frontier of advanced logic manufacturing.

Challenges toward Social Implementation of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs)
■講師(Lecturer):
ASARI Daisuke, Representative Director & CEO, Atomis Inc.
■概要(Summary):
