Multiscale Biosystems Engineering

Our body can be considered as a system composed of multiple layers with different size scale; Society, Individual, Organs/Tissues, cells, and biomolecules. These multiscale layers interact each other to maintain our health. Understanding biological phenomena from this viewpoint is important for achieving various biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, drug delivery, diagnostics, and biosensing. In this lecture, examples of recent investigations will be introduced, based on chemical system engineering.

授業計画
The lecture will be divided into three parts as follows. Prof. Sugihara: This part aims to capture the bridge between lipid molecules and their applications in the society via introducing the lipid self-assembly, its use in the development of biotechnologies such as electrophysiology, and their applications towards drug development. <Topics> Lipid self-assembly, Electrophysiology, Colorimetric biosensor, Drug screening Prof. Nishikawa: This part aims to present the human body as multi-scale biosystems from the level of cells to organs, and provides an overview of the applications of regenerative medicine and preclinical research. The basics of cells and organs will be covered as needed. <Topics> Cell and organ systems, In vitro studies and microphysiological systems (MPS), In vivo and in silico studies Prof. Ohta: This part aims to discuss nanoparticle-based diagnostics, including bioimaging and biomarker detection, from the viewpoint of multiscale biosystems. <Topics> Nanoparticle transport inside the body, Functional nanoparticles-based diagnostic imaging Detection of biomolecular signature for diagnostics
