分子生物化学Ⅱ

Molecular Biochemistry II Connecting Molecular Biology with Your Research: Developing Original Proposals through Interdisciplinary Perspectives
Our department brings together diverse research fields grounded in chemistry and molecular biology. Building on this interdisciplinary environment, this course uses mechanisms and phenomena related to molecular biology to introduce students to perspectives and approaches beyond their own research specialties.
Students will explore a selected mechanism or phenomenon, learn its molecular basis, and identify connections with their own research. By combining knowledge and perspectives from different fields, they will develop a research proposal based on their own ideas. Through this process, students will deepen their understanding of molecular biology, reconsider their research from a new perspective, and discover opportunities to expand its scope.

Rather than seeking comprehensive coverage of molecular biology, the course emphasizes exploring a specific topic in depth through its relevance to each student’s interests and expertise. It also provides opportunities to communicate original ideas and develop them further through discussion and feedback.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

Explain the molecular mechanism underlying a selected biological phenomenon in their own words.
Identify connections between their own research and knowledge or perspectives from other fields.
Formulate a research question, define its objectives, and propose an approach to testing their ideas.
Refine their proposals through presentations and discussion, and identify new directions for their research.

授業計画
1October 2Course Introduction: An overview of the course objectives, format, and approach to developing a research proposal. 2October 9Introduction to Your Research: Students present the background, objectives, and key molecules or methods of their research to build a shared understanding of each other’s expertise. 3October 16Introduction to Potential Topics: The instructor introduces mechanisms and phenomena related to molecular biology. Students explore possible connections with their own research. 4October 23Preliminary Proposal Presentations: Students explain their selected topic, its connection to their research, and their proposed objectives and strategy, and receive feedback. 5October 30Discussion and Proposal Development: Students refine their proposals through discussion of molecular mechanisms, the rationale for their ideas, and approaches to testing them. 6November 6Independent Study—No Live Class: Students review relevant literature, revise their proposals based on feedback, and prepare their final presentations. 7November 13Final Research Proposal Presentations: Students share their original research proposals and discuss their significance, challenges, and potential for future development.
授業の方法
The course will be conducted in English in a small-group online format. Instructor-led lectures and learning activities using videos and scientific literature will be combined with student presentations and discussions. Students will develop their research proposals in stages, drawing on mechanisms or phenomena related to molecular biology to introduce new perspectives into their own research. Students who already specialize in molecular biology will also explore connections beyond the systems or approaches they normally study. The final presentation should explain the background and molecular mechanism of the selected topic, its connection to the student’s research, the proposed objectives and research strategy, and possible future developments. Students are not required to conduct experiments.
成績評価方法
Final research proposal and presentation: 50% Preliminary presentation and proposal development: 30% Contributions to class discussions: 20% Assessment will emphasize understanding of molecular mechanisms, meaningful connections between disciplines, clarity of research questions and objectives, logical reasoning, appropriate experimental approaches, independent thinking, and improvement in response to feedback. Students will not be assessed solely on the breadth of their prior knowledge or the immediate feasibility of their proposals.
履修上の注意
Students from diverse research backgrounds, including chemistry and molecular biology, are welcome. Extensive prior knowledge of molecular biology is not required, but students are expected to explore unfamiliar concepts and consider how they might relate to their own research. Before the second session, students should prepare a brief introduction to their research, explaining its background, objectives, and key molecules or methods in terms accessible to classmates from other fields. Throughout the course, students are expected to review relevant materials and literature, deepen their understanding of their selected molecular mechanism, and develop their proposals outside class. They should incorporate feedback into subsequent presentations and actively contribute to discussions of other students’ ideas. Presentations and discussions will be conducted in English. When introducing their research, students should use information that can be shared in class and consult their research supervisor beforehand if necessary.
