This course provides a systematic introduction to systems engineering approaches for sustainability, based on real-world case studies. It addresses environmental, resource, and energy challenges by integrating technological, policy, and societal perspectives, with a focus on practical decision-making and system design.
Emphasis is placed on problem structuring through life-cycle thinking and the integrated use of multiple assessment methods, including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Material Flow Analysis (MFA), Risk Assessment (RA), Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) evaluation, scenario analysis, and technology modeling and simulation. The interlinkages among these methods are also explored.
In addition, the course incorporates economic and social science perspectives, as well as risk communication, to equip students with the ability to identify problems and design sustainability-oriented solutions under complex trade-offs. The course is designed for graduate students across engineering disciplines and related fields, not limited to chemical systems engineering.
