This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to making and design from engineering and computational perspectives, covering industrial design, manufacturing processes, materials, mechanical design, CAD, circuit design, actuation, generative design, and real-world deployment. Through lectures and exercises, students will learn basic methods for computer-aided manufacturing, control, and design, while developing the ability to prototype, implement, and evaluate systems under realistic constraints such as materials, fabrication processes, structure, electronics, and application needs.
The course is designed neither as a purely theoretical lecture nor as a heavy fabrication studio. Instead, it emphasizes thinking through making and materializing ideas through computation and design. Students are expected to acquire both practical making skills and design thinking for deciding what should be built and how.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

1. Understand the fundamentals of fabrication processes, materials, mechanical design, and electronics, and their relationships.
2. Use basic practical methods such as CAD, circuit design, and lightweight prototyping.
3. Propose and explain a prototype or design concept connected to their own research or development interests.

This is a practical and interdisciplinary course that combines lectures and exercises. It involves some hands-on work, but it is not intended as a large-scale fabrication studio. Its distinctive feature is the iterative movement between making and thinking: students learn by building, while also reflecting on design choices and research questions. The course is intended for students from diverse backgrounds, including CS, EE, ME, and design-related fields.
