In recent years, mechanobiology, which investigates how cells and tissues sense their mechanical environment and convert mechanical information into biological responses, has become an important research field not only in biology and medicine but also in engineering disciplines such as mechanical engineering and materials engineering. In tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, technologies are also being developed to reproduce and control the functions of biological tissues through appropriate combinations of cells, materials, and mechanical stimuli.
This course aims to provide students with an understanding of how cells recognize and respond to mechanical stimuli, from the underlying molecular mechanisms to tissue-level phenomena. Students will also learn how knowledge from mechanobiology is applied to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine from the perspectives of precision engineering and mechanical engineering. The course further explores how engineering knowledge acquired in areas such as mechanics, materials, manufacturing, and measurement can be used to understand biological systems and develop medical technologies.

In the first half of the course, students will be introduced to applications of mechanobiology and tissue engineering, including regenerative medicine, cell culture, medical devices, and the control of cellular functions using ultrasound and other mechanical stimuli. These examples will provide an overview of the field. In the second half, students will learn the fundamental concepts needed to understand these applications, including cell biology, biomaterials, biomechanics, the extracellular matrix, cell adhesion, and mechanotransduction. Students will also participate in a seminar-style discussion of representative recent research papers to deepen their understanding of current research trends.
The course will be conducted online in a lecture format. Students will also present and discuss research papers as appropriate.
No examination will be given. Grades will be determined comprehensively based on attendance, presentations and contributions to discussions in the paper-reading seminar, and in-class reports. In-class reports will not be assigned in every class, and students will be notified in advance when a report is to be assigned.
