Thermodynamics composes an important basis for pursuing any research related to engineering and/or industrial products which utilize energy. Although most of the students who majored in mechanical engineering should have studied thermodynamics in the undergraduate lecture, complete understanding of thermodynamics is often very difficult. This lecture is delivered to help them develop sound understanding of thermodynamics so that they can make use of thermodynamics in a practical sense.
This lecture will start with the fundamental discussion on the first and second laws of thermodynamics in a different manner from what is written in the standard textbooks in thermodynamics but in a very simple way. On the basis of the fundamental understanding of thermodynamics, the lecture will next focus on entropy production (exergy loss) and then extend their applications to several important thermodynamic systems, including the Brayton cycle, the Rankin cycle, refrigeration cycle and cases where chemical and electrochemical reactions are involved such as fuel cells and batteries.
