Urban Design Perspectives: Design, Public Policy, and Co-creative Culture While urban design is undoubtedly a practical discipline, its practice becomes unstable unless the history, theory, and the systematic knowledge all that underpin it are cleared. This course aims to systematically organize and understand the accumulated knowledge and future prospects of contemporary urban design as theoretically as possible. In particular, we will define the third phase of urban design as a co-creative culture and examine the nature of urban design as a co-creative culture within a historical timeline.
The objective of this course is to provide a systematic understanding of knowledge related to urban design. First, as the basic framework for this course, we will organize the historical development of urban design into three stages: the design stage, the public policy stage, and the co-creative culture stage. These represent not only historical stages of development but also the current structure of urban design practice. However, please note that the co-creative culture stage is presented as a hypothesis and a perspective. In this course, we will explore the body of knowledge in urban design not only through the historical progression outlined above but also through three distinct domains: theory, profession(including practical works and activities), and tool. We will apply the aforementioned stage theory to these three domains. For each domain, the course will combine input lectures by Nakajima with lectures by guest lectureres. At the conclusion of the course, based on student presentations, we will engage in a discussion regarding the theories, professions, and tools of urban design within the context of a co-creative culture.
