Plant metabolism
/Metabolism constitutes the foundation of life and is regulated in an exceptionally sophisticated and precise manner. In plants, metabolism is particularly complex because, in addition to primary metabolites such as sugars and amino acids, plants produce a wide variety of specialized (secondary) metabolites, including terpenoids and alkaloids. Throughout history, humans have utilized plant metabolites as nutrients, medicines, and fragrances, and the elucidation of their biosynthetic mechanisms has been actively pursued from applied perspectives. While specialized metabolites are widely recognized for their roles in inter-organismal interactions, their functions in plant developmental processes have also been increasingly revealed in recent years. This course provides an overview of the fundamentals of metabolomics, which aims at the comprehensive qualitative and quantitative analysis of metabolites, and introduces cutting-edge plant research based on metabolomics to deepen understanding of plant metabolism.
