Mechanisms of Homeostasis Maintenance: Insights from Cellular Life and Death

This course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how living organisms maintain homeostasis by examining research achievements that have been recognized by the Nobel Prize. Particular emphasis is placed on the mechanisms of cellular “proliferation” and “death,” as well as the immune system that integrates and regulates these processes. Students will systematically learn concepts ranging from fundamental molecular and cellular principles to their applications in understanding diseases and developing therapeutic strategies.
Through this course, students are expected to achieve the following learning outcomes:
1. Explain the roles of cell proliferation, cell death, and the immune system in maintaining biological homeostasis.
2. Understand how dysregulation of these processes leads to the development of diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and autoimmune disorders.
3. Outline the logic of discovery and experimental approaches underlying major Nobel Prize-gifted research.
4. Describe how findings from basic research are translated into the development of therapeutic interventions.
5. Develop the ability to view life phenomena in an integrated manner and to consider scientific questions from a research-oriented perspective.

This course will be conducted over two days, on September 10 and 11. The six class sessions will cover the following topics: 1. Mechanisms of cell proliferation and cancer as a consequence of dysregulation in proliferation. 2. Molecular mechanisms and physiological significance of cell death (including apoptosis). 3. The immune system as an integrated regulator of cell proliferation and cell death. 4. The role of the cell membrane as a platform for regulating proliferation, cell death, and immunity. 5. Experimental approaches used to identify regulatory factors governing proliferation, cell death, and immune responses. 6. Understanding diseases and developing therapeutic strategies based on these principles. Emphasis will be placed on the historical progression of key discoveries and the experimental strategies that enabled them, fostering an understanding of how basic research has elucidated fundamental principles and translated them into advances in medicine and healthcare.
The course will be delivered primarily in a lecture format, using PowerPoint presentations to explain key concepts with figures, references, and historical context. Emphasis will be placed on the research processes that led to major discoveries, such as hypothesis formulation, experimental design, and technological innovation, so that students can learn the modes of thinking characteristic of basic research. In addition, discussions and narratives behind landmark discoveries will be incorporated as appropriate to promote deeper understanding.
Students will be evaluated comprehensively based on class participation and short assignments (e.g., reports). In addition to accurate understanding of biological knowledge, emphasis will be placed on the ability to explain biological phenomena logically and coherently.
