The Origin and Evolution of Grasses That Produced the Three Major Grains
Humankind relies heavily on the three major cereal crops—rice, wheat, and maize—as primary calorie sources, all of which belong to the grass family. Why did grasses become so exceptionally suited as cereal crops? When and how did these plants emerge, and how did they develop such a strong interdependent relationship with humans? This lecture focuses on the evolutionary history and developmental characteristics of grasses, explaining the process from adaptation to grasslands to their domestication as crops. It covers the morphogenesis mechanisms of nutritional and reproductive organs, the evolution of stem structure, and the formation processes of major grains. Additionally, it addresses genomic analysis and the utilization of wild rice genetic resources, aiming to provide a systematic understanding of the biological foundations underlying grain formation.
