宇宙惑星科学特論IV Special Lecture of Space and Planetary Science IV
This course will provide an introduction to physics and chemistry of comets as the most pristine icy small bodies in our solar system. A cometary nucleus is composed of refractory grains and volatile ices, and those materials have not been altered significantly after they were incorporated into the nucleus at the early phase of the solar system formation 4.6 Gyrs ago. The course will introduce basic physical processes related to the formation of comets and the cometary activities (gas/dust relese from nucleus surface, formation of dusty gas coma and tails). The course will also review recent progress in cometary sciences.

The course will consist of the following 6 lectures (subject to change): Class 1: Observational History of Comets from Ancient to Modern Eras Class 2: Dynamics of Nucleus and Dust Grains in Coma/Tail Class 3: Gas Dynamics and Chemistry of Molecules/Atoms in Coma Class 4: Remote Observations of Comets Class 5: Flyby and Rendezvous Missions of the Comets Class 6: Link from the Molecular Cloud to the Solar System
