Formation of biosphere in response to Earth's surface environmental change
In this course, three faculty members specializing in biogeochemistry and Earth history will explore the co-evolution of life and the environment. From Lectures 1 to 5, we will examine research approaches in biology from a chemical perspective. After introducing the fundamentals of bioinorganic chemistry, the course will progressively expand in scale—from prokaryotes to eukaryotes, multicellular organisms, and ecosystems—highlighting the distinctive research methodologies employed at each hierarchical level. Lectures 6 to 9 will focus on elemental cycles, including stable isotopes, and their application to paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Within a temporal framework spanning from geological eras to the Anthropocene, we will consider how the Earth’s surface environmental system has evolved. The course will also introduce the practical realities of large-scale collaborative research projects, such as ocean drilling programs. Lectures 10 to 13 will provide a more detailed examination of methods in paleoenvironmental research, with particular emphasis on geochronology, environmental archives, paleotemperature reconstruction, and environmental reconstruction techniques. In addition to lectures, students will participate in activities such as presenting and discussing research papers.
