With the advancement of laser technology, coherent laser radiation has become available over a broad range of wavelengths and frequencies, extending from X-rays to the visible and infrared regions, and further into the terahertz domain. This progress has enabled a wide variety of fundamental and applied research activities. In parallel, recent developments in micro- and nanofabrication technologies have made it possible to control light–matter interactions using nanostructures smaller than the wavelength of light, leading to significant advances in novel optical control techniques.
In this lecture, we will explain the fundamental principles governing the interaction between light or electromagnetic waves and subwavelength micro- and nanostructures, as well as the basic concepts of light manipulation based on these principles. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to visit the Nanofabrication Process Room at the University of Tokyo to gain first-hand experience of the fabrication environment.
