Introduction to topological order: Nonlocal order and the Gauging of Symmetry
(Course given in English)
•Ising
•Toric Code
The aim of this course is to provide a unified understanding of the concepts of topological phases and symmetry in modern condensed matter physics through concrete lattice models. In conventional Landau theory, phases of matter are characterized by local order parameters and spontaneous symmetry breaking. However, in topological phases such as the Haldane phase and the Toric Code, order is characterized by nonlocal operators (line operators) rather than local observables.
In this course, we will study:
•String order and the Kennedy–Tasaki transformation in the Haldane chain
•Duality in the Ising model and the gauging of global symmetries
•Line operators and anyons in the Toric Code
•Reinterpretation of topological order in terms of generalized symmetries (higher-form symmetries)
Through these topics, we aim to understand modern phases of matter from the viewpoint of the increasing support dimension of order parameters and the corresponding extension of symmetry concepts.
