Special Lecture on Global Society I

環境社会技術とサステナビリティ Technology and Sustainable Development
技術が社会に於いて使われるとき、その工学的な性能だけではなくその社会性や人間との関わりが問われる。この講義では、環境に関わるさまざまな技術システムの例を通じて、技術と社会の関係を論じる。
When technologies are used in the society, not only their physical performance but also their relevance to the society or relationship with the mankind may be questioned. The present course provide different views on the technology-society relation by showing various examples of environment-related technology systems.

授業計画
新領域創成科学研究科の4人の教授が、それぞれの専門に基づき上記のキーワードに関わる話題を講義する。 Four professors from Graduate School of Frontier Sciences will give lectures based on their own expertise according to the keywords given above. Time: Wednesday, 8:30-10:15 Venue: Instructors: Jun Sasaki, ***** Tomochika TOKUNAGA, GSFS, ***** Toru SATO, GSFS, ***** Shinichi WARISAWA, GSFS, ***** Brief Description of Course Contents <Prof. Jun Sasaki> Urban bays face many problems, including eutrophication due to nutrient loading, coastal disasters of storm surges and tsunamis, and degradation of fishery resources due to loss of habitats. By contrast, coastal marine environments are expected to be a sink of carbon dioxide called blue carbon. New coastal environmental management is expected to have co-benefits with enhancing ecosystem services, such as mitigating coastal disasters, water purification, and revitalizing fishery resources. The history of such environmental issues in urban bays will be introduced, and prospects for climate change mitigation and adaptation will be discussed. <Prof. Tomochika Tokunaga> Subsurface environment can be, and should be utilized effectively and safely for our society to be sustainable. Here, the characteristics of subsurface environment are explained first. Then, the geological disposal of high-level nuclear waste is chosen as an example to discuss possibilities and challenges how we, engineers, can collaborate and communicate with the society on the topic which can lead to conflict situation. <Prof. Toru Sato> Computational simulation is definitely a powerful tool to predict the environmental impacts of offshore large-scale technologies. In the lectures, how the computational models can work for the near-future offshore exploitation, such as methane hydrate development, sub-sea underground storage of CO2, and development of bioreactors to grow microalgae to produce biofuel. <Prof. Shinichi Warisawa> Sensing technologies for environment are introduced.  Principle of sensing technologies and mechanism of sensing devices are explained.  State-of-the-art sensing technologies from nano scale to global scale are introduced.  Emerging problems such as global heating, air pollution, energy management are discussed.
