Theory of Normativity in Global Society IV

Introduction 1. Review of Human Rights 2. United Nations Human Rights Mechanisms - general and Universal Periodic Review [modified: Class 2 will also have a guest lecturer (Dr Katarina Schwarz, Associate Director (Law and Policy) | The Rights Lab) on human trafficking. 3. United Nations Human Rights Mechanisms - treaty bodies and Human Rights Committee Civil and Political Rights Issues in Japan - Criminal Justice System - Freedom of Expression: Hate speech, the Media - Gender Equality and Discrimination against Women - Counter-Terrorism Measures - Human Rights Issues surrounding Fukushima - Refugees and Displaced Persons Plus 1-2 more topics of registered students' choice. Some specific cases will be chosen for the discussion classes.

The course will take multiple teaching methods. Primarily two methods are used: lectures and discussion, and some exercises (role play). The first 3 classes will be lecture style. The rest will be with a lecture on the topic, followed by team discussion, sometimes exercises, plenary feedback and discussion.
